Every now and then a show attracts a cast that raises it to another level on par with the best of modern cinema and draws audiences back week after week. For American Horror Story: Asylum on the FX television network, the outstanding performances and gripping storylines of the show’s second season are re-imagining a television genre.

Actress Chloë Sevigny, who is known for roles in Boys Don’t Cry (for which she received an Academy Award nomination), American Psycho and the HBO series Big Love, delivers a standout performance as Shelley, a patient trapped in the asylum.

In a recent interview with StayFamous.Net, Sevigny discussed her role on the hit FX original series.

Michael Aaron Gallagher: “This isn’t the first character that you’ve played where you’ve had to try to be sort of sexy or had love scenes in some capacity, so is that something that you’re inherently comfortable with, or do you find yourself outside of your comfort zone with some of those types of scenes?”

Chloë Sevigny: “I’m not comfortable doing them. I don’t think anybody ever gets comfortable doing those kinds of scenes. You know, it’s what the part called for and you just have to kind of stay grounded in it and think about her and why she’s there and what the circumstances are, why she’s [trying to seduce Dr. Arden] for her benefit or for the benefit of the others in the hospital to help them escape. And you know you just try and ground things and think about the reasons for why they’re happening.”

Michael Aaron Gallagher: “What has the response to your role been like from your family and your fans?”

Chloë Sevigny: “Well, nobody in my family is watching. I know my mom couldn’t watch it. She’s too much of a scaredy cat, but my friends are all loving it. Even last night I got like 100 texts saying like – ‘Oh my God, your legs!’ I do have some friends come visit me on the set and stuff and I share photos that I secretly took them on my BlackBerry and everybody is really excited about it.… it’s kind of a fun thing.”

American Horror Story: Asylum airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
