Indie-pop recording artist Jordan JAE recently released her new single “Teenage Brilliant.” With a growing fan base and an evolving style, the 16 year-old singer-songwriter from New York City has recently been gaining attention for her outstanding YouTube covers and her catchy original songs. With a forthcoming EP on the way, she continues to stand out among her peers and deliver emotional vocal performances and heartfelt lyrics with an effortless style that captures the essence of her generation.
In a recent Q&A with Jordan, I asked her about her upcoming EP and what makes her new single “Teenage Brilliant” so special.
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “What made you decide to start posting YouTube videos?”
Jordan JAE: “I started putting videos on YouTube because of a strong desire to connect with people through my music. I wanted to share my music and interact with people, doing what I loved.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “With so many singers competing for record deals, recording songs on YouTube and joining TV singing competitions, do you feel like it’s been difficult to stand out from your peers and get noticed? Has being in New York City helped you at all in terms of playing gigs or networking?”
Jordan JAE: “Honestly, I have never really focused on standing out. It isn’t that I don’t want to, it’s that I believe that the harder I work and dedicate myself to my music career, the better chance I have at being noticed. Living in NYC has definitely influenced my music and made it much easier to connect with other musicians and people who could help me with my career. It is really such a blessing.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “As you begin to build a bigger fanbase, what type of artist are you ultimately hoping to become? Is there someone in the industry that you would like to model your musical style after?”
Jordan JAE: “I would really like to be an artist like Ed Sheeran. I think it is so amazing that he has never changed his music for anyone. It seems as though he really loves every moment of his music career and has a fan base that really appreciates the music he makes and loves. He is very admirable.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “Can you talk a little bit about your single ‘Teenage Brilliant?’ How did the song come about?”
Jordan JAE: “The song came about because lately I’ve been feeling a lot of pressure revolving around my age. I feel as though during your teen years we are judged more harshly and this can be extremely traumatic considering this is the age we do the most ‘growing up.’ I believe it is important to remind teens that it’s normal to make mistakes and that we don’t have to feel ashamed of them. We are just people. We can’t live up to everyone’s opposite expectations, just exceed our own.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “How did YouTuber Ricky Dillon end up being a part of the music video?”
Jordan JAE: “I met Ricky through my manager and it was such a pleasure having him on the shoot! He is a very nice and immensely talented guy.”

Michael Aaron Gallagher: “You’re going to be releasing your debut EP soon. So what can you tell me about how it’s been going writing and recording it?”
Jordan JAE: “It has been amazing writing and recording my EP! I have been working with Noise Club, who are very talented producers. We always have so much fun working together and that really helps with my musical creative process. I can’t wait to finally share my EP with everyone! It has been, in one word — EPIC. I think you guys are gonna love it.”
