Known for hit songs like “Baby Girl,” “It Happens,” “Already Gone” and “Stuck Like Glue,” Sugarland was named Vocal Duo of the Year. In an interview with Today’s CNY Woman magazine, Jennifer Nettles shares experiences as a member of one of country music’s leading duos and talks about her upcoming concert at the NYS Fair.

Michael Aaron Gallagher: “When you step on stage, what goes through your mind?”

Jennifer Nettles: “Being on stage is a very present, in-the-moment experience. It is quite zen actually. It is a focused, instinctive consciousness. Like an athlete in a game … more action than thought.”

Michael Aaron Gallagher: “As a group, what do you want a Sugarland concert experience to be like for fans?”

Jennifer Nettles: “I want fans to experience communion. What’s happening in the audience is just as important as what is happening on stage. For those moments we are all having a shared experience. I hope they can get lost in that moment where they allow themselves to sing, dance, let go.”

Michael Aaron Gallagher: “What’s your favorite song to perform on stage right now?”

Jennifer Nettles: “‘Incredible Machine’ – That song is magic to me.”

Michael Aaron Gallagher: “What are some favorite fair memories from when you were growing up?”

Jennifer Nettles: “Growing up in a small town, the Fair was a highly anticipated event each year. I loved it all! The smells of cotton candy and livestock mixed with an occasional waft of cigarette smoke from one of the carnival workers. The whirl of so many colorful, blinking lights on the rides. The heavy metal music blaring from ‘The Gravitron’ ride. Children screaming with delight as they spin ‘round and ‘round. A candied apple as a souvenir that rarely made it home before being eaten.”

Michael Aaron Gallagher: “As a successful country artist, what time management strategies and business lessons do you think a woman can use regardless of her career?”

Jennifer Nettles: “The best career and life advice I’ve ever gotten or could ever give: ‘Until you can say a clear and confident ‘no’ your ‘yes’ won’t mean as much.’ I still have to practice at that. Though I’m certainly getting better at it!”

Michael Aaron Gallagher: “What has it been like being on tour with Sara Bareilles and what do you like about her and her music?”

Jennifer Nettles: “I adore sweet Sara! She is an excellent musician and a wonderful performer. Moreover, she is whip smart and super funny. We share an affinity for dry and irreverent humor so I am always laughing when I’m around her.”
