Austin Butler returns to ‘Life Unexpected’

As Jones, Butler plays a guy who struggles to win the affection of Lux (played by Britt Robertson).
“He just has a really easy life on the outside,” Butler said, “And then he meets Lux and she’s not like any girl that he’s ever met. She isn’t perfect. She’s got a lot of baggage… but she’s captivating and so he falls for her.”
I recently had the chance to ask Butler about the second season of Life Unexpected. Here’s what he had to say.
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “What’s your favorite part about being on the show?”
Austin Butler: “I’d say it’s the group of people that are on the show. I mean it starts from Liz (Tigelaar) and it goes all the way down. Just because everybody is like a big family and it’s really cool. We film up in Vancouver, so we’re all away from home and so it’s really fun because we’ll all go out to eat after work… It’s like a big family group, which I love.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “You mentioned that you’ve been able to bond with the cast. Is there anyone in particular that you’ve enjoyed hanging out with?”
Austin Butler: “I look up to Kris Polaha so much. He’s such a good guy and such a nice person… I would like to mold myself after him, as far as when I grow up, to be like him… He’s just awesome.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “Do you feel like this character is helping you grow and mature as an actor?”

Austin Butler: “Yeah, definitely. I mean, I think every acting experience helps me just be more comfortable in front of a camera, be more comfortable saying words that aren’t mine… And this character in particular is really cool because it’s such a great show and it’s such great writing.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “What’s it like working with Britt and how did you two meet?”
Austin Butler: “We met before the show ever started. We had mutual friends. We’d actually been in an acting class together one time and like spoken two words together. But it was cool to get to work with her… She’s such a brilliant actress, and I learn so much from her all the time. She’s one of the best actresses that I’ve ever met.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “How have your fans responded to you being on the show?”
Austin Butler: “They love it. It’s more of an adult show than some of the other TV stuff that I’ve done, which is cool for me and I think cool for them, because now they’re growing up and I’m growing up. So it’s cool to be able to switch gears a little bit.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “What would you like to see happen with your character? Without giving anything away are there any surprises in store?”
Austin Butler: “There are, and not many that I can speak of. Basically, what I can say is he’s still pining for Lux but she has just been kind of dragging him along and kind of pulling him in and pushing him away and pulling him in and pushing him away. Now he doesn’t want to just wait around forever and at the same time he still is crazy about her.”
