Anyone Can Be Famous

Anyone can be famous, but it takes a special kind of person to stay famous. Ogden Nash once said, “I was born a jackdaw; why should I try to be an owl?” The people who stay famous are the ones who stay true to themselves. They don’t try to be something they’re not. They may change over time, but they remain grounded in what makes them who they are, regardless of their imperfections. Your fans and your friends may come and go, but they will only return for the real thing.

It’s funny how often you have to remind people to be themselves. Whether it’s in relationships, business transactions, or just in everyday life, people feel that they somehow aren’t good enough the way they are and that they need to pretend to be someone else in order to be valued or to get what they want.

It seems like everyone in our society wants their “15 minutes of fame.” Most people are willing to do just about anything for the attention. In a lot of ways, it’s a sad commentary on our electronically “connected” world full of lonely people. Why compromise your morals, your integrity, your self-respect, your reputation, and your pride for a moment of worthless recognition that will quickly fade?

What most of those people don’t realize is that you can become famous pretty easily. But if what got you there wasn’t genuine, you won’t last. You can try to duplicate your formula, make a more outrageous social or political statement, or even put a video of yourself dancing on social media, but you won’t get it back. Your moment in the spotlight was undeserved. They were laughing at you; they weren’t laughing with you.

Take this as a reminder, popularity is only a measure of the changing tide of public opinion. If you want to be famous, choose wisely between a moment and a legacy.
