“Gavin DeGraw performs at NY State Fair”
Exclusive Interview by Michael Aaron Gallagher

Gavin DeGraw
On the heels of his new single “Not Over You,” 34-year-old singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw will return to Central New York to perform with Train and Maroon 5 at the New York State Fair on Aug. 25, 2011, prior to releasing his new album “Sweeter” on Sept. 6.
DeGraw, who is originally from the Catskills region, rose to fame when his song “I Don’t Want to Be” became the opening theme for The CW television show “One Tree Hill.” He is also known for songs like “In Love With A Girl,” “Chariot” and “Follow Through.”
In a recent interview he talked about his upcoming return to CNY for the Fair.
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “What’s a typical day for you like when you’re on tour? How do you like to prepare for your concert?”
Gavin DeGraw: “Before the gig, we’ll be backstage talking about set lists and what songs we feel comfortable playing for the crowd and trying to read the crowd a little bit… watching how they’re reacting out there.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “For people who may have seen you perform before, what are you going to bring to the stage this summer that they haven’t seen or heard from you?”
Gavin DeGraw: “Well, the surprises will really just be the new material… I just feel like there’s a great vibe between the players and I think that will translate well to the audience. And we just feel so good about the material we’re going on the road with right now, not just the material that people are already familiar with but with the new songs and the new album.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “Your new album will be coming out soon. Do you feel any pressure to raise the bar for yourself when you’re writing and performing in the studio, to top your previous hits?”
Gavin DeGraw: “Not too many batters get up there and go ‘I can’t wait to hit a single.’ I want to hit a home run, you know? I want to hit it out of the park. That’s how I want to operate. And I want to dream big. And I want to continue to dream big. So in the studio and, of course, out in the shows, I’m dreaming big. I’m seeing it at its fullest potential and working towards that at all times.”
Michael Aaron Gallagher: “How do you want people to see you as a musician?”
Gavin DeGraw: “I’d like them to see me as a guy who really cares about the music side of the music business. I really do play because I love to play music. I just want to be able to make my mark as a musician, as someone who’s passionate about music, as someone who’s connecting to his fans in the most real way possible. I want them to hear the music and to feel it. I want that identifiability, ‘Wow that guy, he represents me, what I’m about, what I go through and how I feel. And I like that he’s being real with me.’ And that’s how I want to translate.”
