“5 Rules for Staying Famous: A Beginner’s Guide on How to Stay Famous (Part 2)”
By Michael Aaron Gallagher of StayFamous.Net
Now that we’ve determined what makes you popular in your social circle, we need to make sure you keep your status as “Life of the Party.”
First, we’ll go over the rules, then we’ll discuss some steps you can follow to stay on top.
Rule 1: Be Pure of Heart
If you are reading this article because you want to use your popularity to make lots of money, or to improve your love life, you will likely find your efforts unsuccessful. Most people don’t stay famous because they wanted to be famous, they stay famous because they are making a contribution to the world around them and their work draws them out into the public eye, again and again. Their fame is an extension of their ability to be good at what they do.
If you are a gifted artist, you paint for the sake of your art, for the feeling it brings to you and to others around you. If you are setting out to be a rich and famous artist, your priorities are not in the right place, and you will fail, because you cannot create art worthy of lasting attention, without an authentic passion for the process, the creation, and the final product.
Rule 2: Don’t Give it Away, Unless You’ve Got Something They’ll Pay For
One of the biggest mistakes you can make is failing to identify what people are willing to pay for. It’s safe to say that every day you do something that you could be making money doing, but you may not even recognize it. Sometimes your hobby can be a source of revenue and greater recognition for you. If you knit, stop giving away all your work to friends and family. Make them pay for it. You’re worth it, and so is your time.
The exception to this rule is if you are only giving them a taste of the whole product. In other words, give away a knitted case for a pair of sunglasses, and make them crave the matching scarf to go with it. In that instance, you aren’t giving away anything, you’re enticing them to want more of your work.
Rule 3: How Popular You Are Isn’t Up to You, So Don’t Sweat It
In spite of all the techniques you can use to become more famous, you have to understand that your exact level of popularity may not be entirely up to you. Although there are things you can do to improve your visibility, there is no exact formula for attaining prosperity. If there was, countless boy bands would have topped the charts, thousands of movies would have been blockbusters, and scores of models would have been beauty queens.
The truth is popularity, social recognition, notoriety, and fame are all slightly different from each other. If you’re doing your best to be authentic and you’ve thought about ways you can improve what you do, you are well on your way to achieving the right balance of prosperity for yourself.
Most people want more fame so they can control their own destiny, but the fact is the more famous you become, the less control you have. You give up control over what people say about you in the media, over your private life, and over your reputation. You are constantly giving up a part of yourself, in order to maintain the fickle attention of the public, who loves to be distracted by the next shiny object that comes along.
Rule 4: Give Back
Whether you asked for it or not, your place in life (no matter how famous you are) is to find your purpose and to use the talents you were given. You will find great rewards in life by giving back to others. This is the one time, when it’s okay to give it away for free. It doesn’t matter who you are or how old you are, everyone has something to offer the world. Some people cook, others sew, some people blog, and some are still searching for the hobby that is right for them. But no matter who you are, you have a talent that can be used somewhere, and there is no doubt that a little volunteering will improve, not only your life, but the lives of those around you.
And for those of you who are already too famous or too lazy to volunteer, at least consider donating to charity, so that someone else can get the job done. It’s our responsibility to do more with what we have, and each of us can make the world a better place to live in, if we can just give a little of ourselves.
Rule 5: Always Remember, It Isn’t a Dual
I know it sounds like an oxymoron, but staying famous isn’t like a vicious reality show where only one person wins, even though you are competing for the attention of millions of people.
As a former athlete, I used to go up against hundreds of other soccer players from around the world. Unlike many of my peers, I never viewed it as a “win-at-all-costs” game. In fact, there were many occasions when I would take time out of the game to talk to my opponent or to praise them for their hard work and their effort in trying to stop me from scoring a goal. Even though we were both competing against each other for the same prize, I knew that ultimately it wasn’t about who won the contest. It was about playing a game that was fair, fun, and unforgettable.
I would talk to my opponents because I genuinely loved the sport we were playing, and I wanted to learn what they knew, and incorporate every trick I saw into my repertoire. As I grew older, I found that being friends with my “enemies” actually served me well. There were many times when I avoided a cheap foul because my opponent didn’t want to “take me out” of the game, simply because I was a threat to their victory. They understood and respected that I played with sportsmanship and they returned my kindness and friendship.
Unfortunately, too few business professionals understand that the same concepts apply to business. Many marketing agencies and private consultants are afraid of collaborating or sharing ideas with each other because they feel threatened and worry that someone will steal their clients away from them. Instead, they should be saying, how can we work together to get everyone where they want to be? There is plenty of fame and publicity to go around, so don’t ever feel like you need to attack someone else to maintain your position of popularity in the world. Clients will come and go, but your reputation will last forever.
No matter how famous you are, you will probably find someone who is bigger and better than you. Accept that fact now and don’t take it too seriously when you don’t get all the attention you want. If you love what you do, and you’re there for the right reasons, fame will continue to seek you out. You may not win every contest, but the journey will be worthwhile.
