When I heard this next marketing story, I knew I had to comment about it. I was watching The Ivory Tower Half Hour (you can view episodes online at, a political and current events commentary show, which features a panel of university professors from area colleges across Central New York. They discussed the recent University of Colorado decision to allow the naming rights to be sold for a Men’s restroom for a $25,000 investment.

Now I am not sure which is more amusing, the idea that just about anything can be used to promote an idea, or the actual idea the investor Brad Feld wanted to promote. According to the Associated Press (Denver Post) the plaque reads, “The best ideas often come at inconvenient times. Don’t ever close your mind to them.” They also quoted him as saying, “I just wanted a plaque outside of the men’s room to inspire people as they walk in to do their business.” (Boulder Daily Camera)

Before you think there are no more ways to promote yourself or your company, remember there is always something you haven’t thought of yet. You just have to be creative and think outside the stall.
